In 1996, Hyundai Precision Engineering Industries (HDPI) were bidding to the Korean High Speed Rail Corporation (KHSRC) for the design and Supply of two workshops for the Seoul to Pusan High Speed Rail Project, now known as the Korea Train Express, or KTX.

HDPI, in turn, contracted with D&P to provide a complete design, including detailed calculations, for the Main Workshop to support their bid.

The Work Scope included the following functions:
  • Review of maintenance philosophies for rolling stock, fixed facilities and preparation of the workshop design criteria. This included the general principles to be adopted, calculations of the number of repair and inspection lanes, calculations for the individual shop sizes and assessment of equipment types and quantities in support of the maintenance philosophy adopted.
  • Review of the maintenance process and general layouts of the individual shops
  • Calculations of the required facilities for fixed facilities
  • Calculation of required manpower
  • Preparation of specifications for maintenance equipment
  • Preparation of manufacture, delivery and installation schedules
  • Preparation of additional equipment lists (i.e. permanent way maintenance equipment, mechanical handling equipment etc
  • Investigation and specification of the computerised Maintenance Management System (MMS)
